Maria was born in Portugal and is well travelled. She spent 7 years in Brazil where she started to develop her painting skills, learning alongside local artists in their studios. Maria draws her inspiration from nature, sky, animals, the sea, most of the times viewing things through a extreme close up or atypical viewpoint.
Maria is working on a series of paintings which aspire to capture the essence of a turbulent climate and consider both the beauty and horror of environmental catastrophes which continue to threaten our delicate ecosystems. She is particularly drawn to figurative abstracts, using rich texture and vibrant colours that reflect her passion for painting.
'Looking past the obvious, I paint something real but from a view point that makes it look abstract.'
